Beyond the Badge: Traceable Key Management for County Employees Across Every Department
Traceable key management is already the standard in most county jails, where a KeyWatcher system logs every key withdrawal by name, time, and authorization level. Outside those walls, most county employees pull keys from a pegboard with no individual record attached. When a corrections officer checks out a key, the transaction is documented: who it was, when they took it, and when it came back. Walk across the county campus to the public works garage, the clerk’s office, or the parks maintenance shed, and there is no audit trail, no automatic alert, and no record connecting a key to a specific person. Same county, same accountability obligation, completely different standard.
